The City of Arlington was founded in 1875 and was incorporated in 1884.  It was named for General Robert E. Lee’s Arlington House (Arlington House is located in Arlington County, Virginia). The City began as a railroad town and quickly grew as a cotton-ginning and farming center.
 
Modern day Arlington is home to the Texas Rangers Major League Baseball Club, Six Flags Over Texas, the University of Texas at Arlington and Tarrant County CollegeArlington will soon be home to the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium, which is set to open in 2009.
 
The City of Arlington is also a major family vacation destination and hosts many conventions and trade shows due to its great location, famous attractions and fine hotels and restaurants.  Almost 7 million visitors a year make Arlington their destination of choice.

The City of Arlington is the entertainment capital of Texas.  Millions of fans come to Arlington to see the Rangers play in one of the finest ballparks in the world, which features a baseball museum, a children’s learning center, picnic areas and a bullpen that is raised five feet above the playing field so fans can watch players warming up.
 
Six Flags Over Texas and Hurricane Harbor also draw millions of visitors yearly.  In addition to these famous attractions, the city offers 82 parks covering 4,651 acres and 44 miles of park trails, including the River Legacy Park, a 1,300 acre park on the Trinity River which features eight miles of paved trails.  Along with all of the family and outdoor recreation, Arlington offers its residents and visitors world-class cultural amenities, symphonies and ballets.
