Burleson is located partially in Johnson County and partially in Tarrant County, Texas. Burleson is an ideal community in which to raise children and begin or expand a business. The city offers the charm of a rural setting and services of a suburban environment. A good reflection of the community’s attitude is the fact that within the last three years, the city has either completed construction or begun constructing new facilities to house the library, the police department and the offices of the city government.
It was also Burleson in which the annual Christianity-related “See You at the Pole” event originated and the city was noted for being an almost completely dry town. Then on November 7, 2006, an election was held that would legalize the sale of alcohol and merchants were allowed to sell alcoholic beverages.
Burleson was founded in 1881, and was originally a watering stop for the KAT railroad. The city started when the MKT railroad was established in 1881 and a depot was built on the town-site. Representing the railroad, Grenville M. Dodge purchased the land. It was originally part of the Henderson survey, from Rev. Henry Renfro. Renfro was allowed to name the depot as part of an agreement and called it Burleson, in honor of Dr. Burleson, his teacher who later became president of Baylor University.
Burleson got its first electricity in 1913. The wires laid for the Interurban powered it, and gas was provided to Burleson in 1921 by Lone Star Gas. In 1924, State Highway 21 was built from Fort Worth to Alvarado through Burleson.
