~ History of Tarrant County

Tarrant County, one of 26 counties created out of the Peters Colony, was established in 1849.  The county was named after a commander for the Republic of Texas, General Edward H. Tarrant, in 1841, who was at the Battle of Village Creek.  The village of Grapevine, the Texas Ranger outpost of Johnson’s Station (in what is now south Arlington), and Bird’s Fort, a short-lived private fort just south of present-day Euless, were early areas of western civilization in the region.

The first county seat election was held in 1851 and the location, just miles to the northeast, received the most votes, and became the first seat of  Tarrant County.  After the military post closed in 1853 and the little towns of Fort Worth and Birdville grew, a stern fight  came between them to be the seat.  In 1856, the second election for county seat was held, when just a few votes moved Birdville out of  Fort Worth.  Fatal duels and fights continued over the next four years by supporters of both locations.  Finally, in 1860, another special election was held.  This time, Fort Worth, by now the larger town, received 548 votes.  The prime location, the center of the county, had 301 votes.  Birdville had only four votes.

From the end of the Civil War and until the mid 1870s, hundreds of thousands of cattle were forced up through Tarrant County  to the railheads in Kansas.  In 1895 the Tarrant County Courthouse  was completed, it was created of pink granite.  The granite came from central Texas, it took two full years to build.  Upon completion, even though the project had come in almost 20% under budget, the residents of the county were so upset by the wastefull spending that the whole Commissioners Court and County Judge were voted from office at the next election.
